Synopsis
The Hand That Feeds the Dead (1974) centers on a physician who continues the controversial research of his late mentor while attempting to repair the severe facial injuries suffered by his wife in a laboratory fire. As young women disappear, grotesque surgical procedures multiply, and the isolated estate becomes the setting for increasingly desperate experiments while those around him begin uncovering the truth behind his work, his pursuit of a cure descends into obsession and murder. This Italian-Turkish gothic horror film examines scientific fixation and bodily corruption within a world of decaying aristocratic grandeur, as personal boundaries erode, with mad science, surgical horror, and destructive obsession.
Criticism
-
La mano che nutre la morte amply deals with recurring themes of Italian Gothic, starting with its evil, Machiavellan central female character opposed to a weak, feeble-willed male figure. … [and] features the umpteenth “black veiled lady” of Italian horror, and liberally draws from such themes as the doppelgänger and the partially disfigured face, half-beautiful and half-horrific…
