Legend of the Werewolf

aka Plague of the Werewolves

Poster of Legend of the Werewolf

Legend of the Werewolf (1975) follows a feral orphan raised by wolves who, adopted by a travelling circus, grows into a man whose lycanthropic transformations unleash violence across 19th-century France. As he drifts into Paris, falls for a cabaret woman, and eludes those who would hunt him, the tension between his human longing and bestial nature deepens. This British Gothic horror blends period dread and tragic monster mythology in a grim tale of cursed identity and doomed desire.

  • Often thought of as a poor man’s The Curse of the Werewolf, it is better than such an assessment suggests. … Directed by Freddie Francis and scripted by Anthony Hinds (John Elder), the Hammer comparisons are understandable … The werewolf makeup is nothing special, but effective none the less, and the climax … is surprisingly bloody, while the final confrontation is really quite heartfelt.
