Synopsis

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1971) centers on a wealthy nobleman recently released from psychiatric care following the death of his wife, Evelyn. As his obsession with red-haired women, increasingly erratic behavior, and reports of Evelyn’s apparent return intensify while a series of brutal murders claim members of his household, he becomes trapped in a web of deception, manipulation, and mounting paranoia. This Italian gothic giallo horror film examines guilt and psychological instability within a decaying aristocratic world, as fear begins to overtake reason, with murder, inheritance schemes, and the lingering influence of the past.

Criticism

  • Photo of Troy Howarth

Despite a handful of impressive sequences and the odd striking image, [The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave] is a pretty drab and slowly-paced affair. Director Emilio P. Miraglia trots out all the Gothic horror clichés and tries hard to pile on surprises for the benefit of the targeted giallo audience, but it is a fairly predictable film when all is said and done. … Like so many Italian thrillers of the era, it attempts to compensate for logic and characterization by basking in weirdness.
