Fisher’s film has acquired a misplaced reputation as a total disaster. … The reconstruction of 221b Baker Street is meticulously done, as is the period recreation of an Edwardian capital thronged with motor cars rather than horse-drawn cabs. … The screenplay is a neat enough puzzle from Curt Siodmak … As for the actors, Hans Söhnker is an agreeably baleful Moriarty, while [Christopher] Lee and [Thorley] Walters are ideally cast as Holmes and Watson.
