Synopsis
Tower of the Seven Hunchbacks (1944) follows a struggling young man in 19th-century Madrid whose gambling success is mysteriously aided by the ghost of a murdered archaeologist. As the spirit urges him to protect his niece and investigate the truth behind his death, the search leads to hidden tunnels and an underground society beneath the city. This Spanish mystery blends gothic fantasy and criminal intrigue in a surreal tale of supernatural intervention and secret worlds.
Criticism

The film’s crepuscular lighting and old-fashioned misterioso score explicitly recall the eeriness of silent cinema, and with the added bonus of Antonio Casal’s charming performance as Basilio it’s a delightful entertainment on all counts.
