Synopsis
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) centers on an extraterrestrial emissary who lands on Earth seeking to address world leaders about the dangers posed by humanity’s growing aggression and nuclear ambitions. As military authorities respond with suspicion and force while the visitor attempts to move anonymously through American society in order to better understand human behavior, tensions escalate toward a demonstration of power designed to compel global cooperation. This science fiction film examines Cold War anxiety and human self-destruction within an atmosphere of political paranoia, as fear begins to overtake reason, with nuclear threat, international conflict, and moral responsibility.
