On the Beach (1959) follows the crew of a nuclear submarine that reaches Australia after a devastating world war destroys most life in the Northern Hemisphere. As the survivors realize that drifting radiation will eventually reach them as well, they attempt to continue their lives while confronting the certainty of extinction. This science fiction drama blends Cold War anxiety, existential reflection, and somber post-apocalyptic atmosphere.
