It comes to life!
-
Karloff doesn’t stay under the bandages for very long – just long enough in fact for one of the most memorable moments in all of the Universal horrors. The resurrection scene is a masterpiece of mood and horror, director Karl Freund wringing maximum suspense from the moment, Karloff’s eyes opening slowly (shades of the awakening of Cesare (Conrad Veidt) in Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari (1920) before), unseen by the viewer, he advances on Norton, terrifying him into insanity before wandering off, a single strand of bandage slithering disquietingly across the floor as he goes. It’s a standout moment of pure terror in a film that otherwise trades on quieter, more psychological chills.
