Nothing Underneath (the title alludes to the superficial nature of the modelling world) proved to be one of the few big giallo hits of the 1980s. Its mixture of thriller elements with glamour, a dash of eroticism and a bit of horror proved to be a successful one, and it certainly remains director Carlo Vanzina’s best contribution to the genre. … Vanzina directs the film with style and authority. The pacing is very good and the images are consistently eye-catching. The murders are not as plentiful as in other gialli of the period, but the shock effects are well done. The finale makes the most inspired use of ultra-slow-motion photography this side of Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), an effect underscored by Pino Donaggio’s beautiful music.
