An Angel for Satan (1966) follows a young woman who arrives in a lakeside village, where her uncanny resemblance to a sinister statue awakens old superstitions and hidden fears. As strange events and violent obsessions engulf the community, the line between innocence and possession blurs. This gothic horror blends eerie atmosphere, psychological tension, and supernatural menace in a tale of desire, corruption, and the uncanny.

In 1966, Barbara Steele was in Rome for one last Italian Gothic horror film, her ninth since making such an in impression in Mario Bava’s masterly La maschera del demonio/Black Sunday/The Mask of Satan (1960). For her final genre outing in Italy and the second and last from director Camillo Mastrocinque who had previously made La cripta e l’incubo/Crypt of Horror (1964). In some respects, it’s one of the best of the 60s Italian Gothic horrors, but it is somewhat compromised by a last-minute plot development that lets it down badly. … An Angel for Satan is a gorgeous looking film and visually at least it serves as a fine send off for Steele.
