Film Synopsis
An Angel for Satan (1966) follows a sculptor hired to restore a centuries-old statue raised from a lake beside an aristocratic estate in late-19th-century Italy. When the returning heiress proves identical to the sculpted woman, changes in her behaviour and a succession of disturbing incidents lead the villagers to suspect an ancestral curse. This Italian Gothic horror uses high-contrast black-and-white photography and a dual-role performance to create brooding tension between sensuality, superstition, and psychological unease.
Critical Perspective
-
In 1966, Barbara Steele was in Rome for one last Italian Gothic horror film, her ninth since making such an in impression in Mario Bava’s masterly La maschera del demonio/Black Sunday/The Mask of Satan (1960). For her final genre outing in Italy and the second and last from director Camillo Mastrocinque who had previously made La cripta e l’incubo/Crypt of Horror (1964). In some respects, it’s one of the best of the 60s Italian Gothic horrors, but it is somewhat compromised by a last-minute plot development that lets it down badly. … An Angel for Satan is a gorgeous looking film and visually at least it serves as a fine send off for Steele.
