“I used to be somebody else… but I traded myself in.”
The Passenger (1975) follows a weary television journalist traveling in Chad who becomes frustrated with his inability to complete his assignment. After discovering the corpse of a man who closely resembles him, he assumes the dead man’s identity in an attempt to escape his own life, only to discover the man was an arms dealer involved in dangerous political dealings. This Italian-Spanish-French drama blends existential mystery, political intrigue, and psychological alienation while examining identity, escape, and the illusion of personal reinvention.
