Synopsis

Paint Your Wagon (1969) follows two gold prospectors who strike a rich claim during the California Gold Rush and build a life around their unexpected fortunes. They encounter a lively soul seeking opportunity who reshapes their desert camp into a bustling place full of music, dance, hope and romantic complications. This Western musical blends frontier adventure with lyrical songs and lighthearted exploration of community, love and ambition in a growing mining town.

Criticism

  • Of all the Roadshow ‘family’ pictures of the 1960s, it’s the only one re-rated PG-13, for ‘thematic material.’ Hailing from the stage way back in 1951, the adaptation of this bloated, ill-guided spectacular points up exactly what not to do when bringing a Broadway play to the movie screen.
