Synopsis
Marquis de Sade’s Prosperities of Vice (1988) follows a decadent count in 1920s Japan whose obsession with the libertine writings of the Marquis de Sade leads him to found a private theatre where criminals, misfits, and society’s low lives perform provocative adaptations for his wealthy circle. As staged fantasy and cruel reality merge, the count’s demand for ever more extreme enactments draws all involved deeper into moral decay and personal peril. This Japanese drama‑thriller blends decadent theatrical spectacle and simmering psychological tension in a provocative meditation on desire and excess.
