Hiruko the Goblin (1991) follows a discredited archaeologist who arrives in a rural Japanese town to investigate the disappearance of his brother-in-law and a student after an ancient tomb tied to a malevolent yokai is disturbed. As bizarre deaths, smoky omens, and monstrous manifestations of the freed evil spirit surge through an abandoned schoolhouse, he and a haunted boy must confront the goblin’s nightmarish influence and seal it away before more lives are lost. This Japanese horror blends grotesque creature-feature terror and supernatural folklore in a surreal tale of curse and survival.
