First-time director Just Jaeckin, a TV commercial vet, brought a soft-focus sensibility and dreamy sensuality to the story, which he later honed to perfection in his far superior The Story of O; coupled with exotic Thai locales and [Sylvia] Kristel’s casual carnal displays, the film is intoxicating enough on its own terms but also tends to drag, with the erotic interludes never really paying off with more than a weak groan or two.
