Synopsis
El transexual (1977) follows a journalist who sets out to understand the disappearance of a celebrated cabaret singer born male who lives as a woman and has fascinated audiences with her life story. As he speaks with people from her past and pieces together her history, he learns that her attempt to undergo a complex sex-reassignment operation had tragic consequences. This Spanish drama blends investigative narrative and tragic melodrama to explore issues of identity, transformation and marginalization in 1970s Spain.
