Film Synopsis
The Rare Breed (1966) depicts an English widow and her daughter arriving in 1884 St. Louis with a Hereford bull they hope to breed with Texas longhorns. A sceptical cowboy agrees to escort the animal west, but his divided loyalties and the hazards of the journey threaten the breeding plan before the bull can be tested on the range. This ranching Western grounds its adventure and romance in the handling of cattle, using the Hereford’s uncertain fate to dramatize resistance to change in the nineteenth-century West.
