Film Synopsis
The Hatchet Man (1932) depicts a hereditary executioner for a Chinese tong in early twentieth-century San Francisco who is ordered to kill his closest friend during a gang war. After raising the man’s daughter to adulthood, he marries her with her consent, but a renewed tong conflict introduces a younger gangster who challenges their bond. This pre-Code crime melodrama frames its story of loyalty and sacrifice through stylized Chinatown settings and the period’s extensive use of white actors in Chinese roles.
