The Breaking Point has many of the fatalistic tendencies associated with film noir although, strictly speaking, it is equally a romantic melodrama, ranging from California to Mexico and exploiting its coastal locations. The Breaking Point is a remake of To Have and Have Not, but is altogether more faithful to the Hemingway novel than Howard Hawks’ film.
