Film Synopsis
Sergeant York (1941) depicts a skilled Tennessee marksman who turns to religion shortly before the United States enters the First World War and drafts him into the Army. When his request for conscientious-objector status is denied, he must determine whether military duty can be reconciled with his belief that killing is forbidden. This biographical war drama contrasts its detailed portrait of rural community life with battlefield action viewed through the protagonist’s continuing moral conflict.
