Film Synopsis
Paint Your Wagon (1969) begins during the California Gold Rush, when a prospector discovers gold while burying a wagon-accident victim and shares the claim with the man’s surviving brother. Their alliance becomes more complicated after one marries a woman who later proposes forming a household with both men, just as the camp’s growing population brings new social pressures. This musical Western places Lerner and Loewe songs within panoramic frontier settings, using broad comedy to contrast itinerant prospectors with the social order arriving behind them.

Of all the Roadshow ‘family’ pictures of the 1960s, it’s the only one re-rated PG-13, for ‘thematic material.’ Hailing from the stage way back in 1951, the adaptation of this bloated, ill-guided spectacular points up exactly what not to do when bringing a Broadway play to the movie screen.
