Film Synopsis
No Trees in the Street (1959) centres on a young woman in an impoverished East London neighbourhood in the late 1930s whose teenage brother begins working for a local racketeer. She tries to keep him out of crime while their mother urges her to marry the man to improve the family’s circumstances. This crime drama unfolds through a detective’s recollection, using crowded tenements and tense domestic confrontations to connect the family’s conflicts with the poverty surrounding them.
